What are the Essential Elements of the International Baccalaureate PYP?

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program (PYP) is a curriculum framework designed for students aged 3-12. The PYP emphasizes a student-centered approach to learning and is based on four essential elements: knowledge, concepts, skills, and action and engagement. Knowledge

The first essential element of the IB PYP is knowledge. The PYP curriculum is designed to provide students with a broad and balanced education that includes knowledge of various subjects and disciplines. The PYP identifies six transdisciplinary themes that serve as a framework for the curriculum. These themes are:

  1. Who we are: Students explore the nature of the self, personal relationships, and how people express themselves.

  2. Where we are in place and time: Students investigate the relationship between time and place, including the past, present, and future, and the impact of location on individuals and societies.

Concepts

Skills

Through the PYP, students are encouraged to identify issues and opportunities for action in their local and global communities. They are then challenged to take action to make a positive difference. This might involve anything from organizing a fundraiser to help a local charity to developing a community service project to help those in need.


The PYP also encourages students to reflect on their actions and the impact they have had. By doing so, students develop a deeper understanding of themselves and their place in the world. They also develop a sense of responsibility and agency that will serve them well in their future endeavors.
